ENERGY AND UTILITIES

For eleven consecutive years, the international accounting and management consulting firm, Grant Thornton, has conducted a thorough comparison of the manufacturing business climate in the fifty states. In their 1990 study, rant Thornton ranked Louisiana second only to Alaska in having the lowest average energy cost of industrial users. Their computed average for the state was $3.45 per one million BTUs compared to the national average of $5.82 per one million BTUs.

Electricity:
Much of Pointe Coupee Parish receives electric service from the Pointe Coupee Electric Membership Corporation (PCEMCO). PCEMCO is headquartered in Pointe Coupee Parish and is the only electric company with a service center in the parish. PCEMCO is one of thirteen member-owned electric distribution cooperatives serving in the state. Louisiana‚s electric cooperative system has nearly $4 billion in assets and provides service to over one million residents in the state.

The thirteen electric distribution cooperatives own approximately 2,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity through their generation and transmission supplier, Cajun Electric Power Cooperative, Inc. Cajun Electric has over $1 billion invested in generation facilities in Pointe Coupee Parish. The Big Cajun I power plant consists of two 105 megawatt steam electric stations fired by natural gas. The Big Cajun II power plant consists of three 540 megawatt steam electric stations fired by low-sulphur, western coal. In addition, Cajun Electric‚s Operations Center is located in Pointe Coupee Parish.

The Operations Center is an important energy control point for the entire Southwest Power Pool transmission grid. The quality of service from Pointe Coupee Electric is extremely reliable. New and expanding industrial companies can qualify for attractive incentive electric rates. PCEMCO offers both firm and interruptible service to qualifying industry.

Energy suppliers in Pointe Coupee Parish include the City of New Roads, Entergy, Louisiana Energy & Power Authority, Pointe Coupee Electric Membership Coop.

Water:
Pointe Coupee Parish has abundant supplies of ground and surface water. Large quantities of ground water are imbedded throughout the parish at an average depth of 600 feet below mean sea level, and about 90 percent of the water used in the parish is from ground water sources. Most of the water is supplied by the alluvial aquifer and used for industry and irrigation. Pointe Coupee also has extensive surface water resources. This includes the Mississippi and Atchafalaya River systems, which bound the parish on three sides. The parish is protected from floods by the Mississippi River levee system and the Morganza Floodway control structure.
